OK---I solved the mystery of the magic clock. I had unplugged the instrument panel for about a half hour. When I plugged it back in it read something like "18:2&" or something pretty closely resembling a 4 digit clock number (the last digit being broken up) higher than 12. When I saw that I thought that I had somehow switched the clock to 24 hour mode (wouldn't that be great) I pushed in the hour button and held it until the clock reset to 12, then 1, then 2 and so on. The clue should have been the broken last digit, but not knowing that Vanagons do not have such a clock I assumed it was like a lot of other digital clocks I reset (like on bike computers) that will flip over to 24 hour if the prerequisite number of correct buttons are pushed.

Thanks to Dave for pointing out that Vanagon clocks sometimes have "other-worldy" readings.

Final thought: As much as I'd like to have a magic clock, I'd rather have a magic gas gauge. = )
