I think this is probably the most important point when it comes to these things. For the money I've put into my money-sucker I could've bought one that LOOKS better, but I think the value of knowing EXACTLY what's been fixed and when is worth a lot more. The utter confidence I have in the mechanicals is based entirely on the fact that I've replaced every piece that even looked funny, and tightened every nut, bolt, and clamp with my own two bloody-knuckled hands.

Just a thought - my vanagon is permanent. Don't ever expect to dispose > of it. Suits me perfect. I told my kids when I've run my race, strap me > in the seat of the Vanagon, and roll it and me into the hole! >

Yep. The valet parking guys where I work are constantly asking me when I'm going to sell them my Vanagon. I laugh and tell them "sorry, I plan to be BURIED in this box".
