Compression loss in both cylinders on the same side at the same time is usually the result of the following: Head gaskets burned out Head studs came loose Both often caused by case warping due to overheating.

After the heads are off, carefully check that the cylinders are in line and that the tops are perfectly even when pushed against the case. If not, strip it down to get the crank, rods, and cam for parts and throw the case away or plan on a lot of machine work, shims, align bores, etc.

I'm looking for a head for my '80 vanagon. I lost all compression on the 1-2 cyl. side, and I need a fair to good head to get it back up and running. I'm getting ready to pull the head to get an exact cause, but I'm leaning towards burned valves to due excessive vaccum leaks when I bought it. Thanks.
