Subject: Re: anybody have 1.9TD w/ air cooled tranny
Comments: To: aatransaxle@DIRECWAY.COM

I have a 1.9TD with the air cooled tranny (your rebuild).

Subjectively it has more torque than any gas engine T3 or T4.

Objectively, comparing with my 2.5l I5 T4 Westy with 4sp auto (gearing is very similar; both cruise 100km/h at 3000rpm) hills that the Diesel takes in 4th gear with a stride require downshift to 3rd gear in the gas (and the auto doesn't always let me downshift when I want...)

Also, the Diesel will do every major montain pass around here in 4th except two (coming up to Bow pass from the north on 93, and going east up Rodgers pass) which require downshift to 3rd.

If the 1.9 TD Diesel is well tuned and breathes well it has an incredibly flat torque curve from 1500rpm and up. Measured rear wheel HP of my 1.9TD a few years ago (when it was new) was 84Hp with a 3" intake system and 2.5" exhaust.

In 3rd it will pull up to 110-120km/h, then the rpm limiter will cut in. Neither gas not Diesel T3's have much power to pass, but that is more due to the incredible air resistance at highway speeds, than to the motor or tranny. The T4 has significantly less drag and this is noticable at highway speeds. On the other hand it's heavier, so overall acceleration is similar.

The turbo Diesel's have varying amount of lag. In my T3 it is very noticable. Going through a stoplight the engine quickly outrevs 1st gear w/o building sufficient turbo pressure, then 2nd starts kind of lethargic, but after a couple seconds gives you a push in the back when the turbo finally builds pressure. From 2-3-4th gear it is possible to keep turbo pressure if one shifts quickly.
