Crutchfield (and some other installers) claim this based on the bracket that is used to suspend the back of the stock units. It is easy to bend the bracket out of the way and put in much deeper units. I have installed a Pioneer AVIC N2 into my Westy, which is a 7" deep unit (I think). On other vehicles, I or the previous owner have done similar (though with different units).
