As a VW mechanic for ten years I used metric and as a home  re modeler for
the last ten I use both , mainly based on what materials  and tools I have
available to me. There are definitely times I prefer one over  the other based on
something I'm trying to do.
I carry tape measures with fractional, metric, and engineers scales.
