The problem with replacing front door speakers is not the depth of the speaker, but rather the protrusion of the speaker grill; some won't clear the window crank handles. We sell factory spacers that move the window crank handles a bit further from the door, allowing a much wider choice of speakers. But there are some decent aftermarket speakers that will fit without them. Be careful of ordering speakers by mail-order if you're not sure they'll clear; better to buy locally where you can hold the grill against the door panel before plunking down your money. As for radios, I've never run into a depth problem (although I can't say I've tried the latest models with built-in DVD players - never felt a need to watch a movie while driving :-). In fact, the ash tray makes wiring easier than on most vehicles, as you can remove it to create somewhat of an "top access hatch" to the wiring. As a result, I've found Vanagons to be a breeze to put a radio in, compared to many other vehicles I've tackled.
