An interesting postscript to our discussion of a central location:

I got an e-mail yesterday from a writer for Wired News. He is writing about the spot that is at the center of the Google map. It turns out to be just northwest of Coffeyville, Kansas, the place where I was born. He contacted me through the geocaching.com website after he saw that I had been geocaching around Coffeyville. He wants me to go out with my GPS, find and describe that center spot - and take a picture.

However, I would still vote for the Black Hills for a campout spot - the KS/OK border is great for winter camping and hiking, but too hot, humid and buggy during the summer.
