I remember these vehicles well. The early Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizons
used a Rabbit engine case and head. The internals were Mopar, Bored to
1.7 liters. Fuel intake was the Holley Progressive 2 barrel (looks like
a Weber) mounted on a water heated manifold. In 81, O2 sensor trim was
added to support the 3 way catalyst. I can't recall the water pump but
all the other accessories were basic Mopar. (Ma's Old Pig Aint Running).
The later 2.2 engine was all Mopar. This engine made its way into the
Reliant, Laser, and other vehicles. The 2.2 got a turbo at some point
and then cam the 2.5. The 2.6L Mitsubishi was used in some of the
larger vehicles including the mini-vans. The 2.6 turbo was great in
Eclipse and Lancer? Only problem was the Mitsi engine liked to crack
heads at 60K. Usually after the 2nd head gasket fiasco. Replacement
heads were about $800 dollars and they were bare. The Mitsi dealer here
stocked them.
The 2.2 and 2.5 engines are not even close in mounting to the VW
transaxle. An adapter would definitely be needed. These engine also
suffered from an undersized cooling system, loose heads, blown gaskets,
worn cam lobes and general short life. I would not even make an effort
to get one into a Vanagon.

just got a weird phone call... so, will a dodge omni
engine fit in a vanagon? the guy (who i know, but i
know he doesn't know vanagons) says it is a direct
bolt up. he was not sure on the year ("either a 82, 3
or 4"), so could be a wasserboxer or diesel. it is
watercooled he says. he is sending me photos, but
until then, someone fill me in on this. a quick google
did not show much.
thanks
matthew
