Subject: Painting Alloy wheels
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Greetings,

Over the last year I acquired a set of Vanagon alloy wheels. One of them was in rough shape, paint-wise. I ordered some Wurth silver spray paint and clear lacquer from:

I was very pleased with the results. I imagine this is what they looked like brand new. Since it now looked slightly better than the other three I went ahead and repainted one of the "good" wheels. This will give me a matching set on one side (driver's side, of course).

The silver paint was VERY forgiving. Splatter, over spray and runs all melted nicely into the final finish. With the lug bolt holes and spokes it is a complex shape to paint, for an amature anyway.

I believe surface preparation is paramount. I thoroughly scrubbed the wheel with 0000 steel wool and paint thinner. Prepared the surface with white Rust-Oleum "Clean Metal Primer", then top-coated with two layers of Silver. Finnaly, two applications of clear lacquer.

Now for tire choices..;-\
