Subject: Opinions on 82 AC Westy
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Hello volks!

I bought an abandoned 82 AC Westy at a tow yard in Seattle a few years ago and have since replaced the battery and all of the rear brakes. I just completed the brakes last night and replaced the oil and gas and drove it up and down the street. To my surprise, it ran great and drove just like vanagons always do. I don't think this van has been driven since 1997. The clutch slips like crazy and the engine sounds like all of the lifters are collapsed (do these have hydraulic lifters?).

I have a few questions. Besides a compression and leakdown test, is there anything that should be tested on these engines? I've always had waterboxers ones and don't know about AC. I kind of want to put a Subaru motor in it (I already have a donor Legacy), but it feels like a waste to replace a motor that seems to run fine.

And when I'm replacing the clutch, is there anything else I should do at the same time besides the normal pilot bearing, throwout bearing, and rear main seal? I also notice this engine leaks much more oil than my 1.9. Maybe that's normal, but I have no idea.

Thanks!
