While most any digital multi meter will do the job, there is a big difference in reliability, accuracy, and safety. Brand names like Fluke cost more but he meter will last forever and you can trust it. Economy meters made in China can be dangerous. On example is a Radio Shack meter I use when on the road. The meter uses the same input jacks for current and voltage. Turn the function selector while the leads are connected and the fuse blows every time as you pass the ammeter function. For automotive use look for frequency and duty cycle or dwell functions. Useful for injector circuit testing. For home use, make sure you can measure higher voltages, both AC and DC. True RMS is needed for testing Inverters. Since digital meters are slow to respond, look for a fast response bar graph and a lighted display for night work.
