Usual causes are overfillitis or piston rings not doing there job. Some oil vapor is normal. But if you get massive amounts into the intake track, something is wrong. Keep the oil level between the marks on the dipstick Do not attempt to keep the level at the top mark. The top mark is not the full mark. It is the maximum do not ever exceed not matter what mark. The Vanagon engine is extremely sensitive to overfilling. When over full, oil temps go up, viscosity goes down. Oil lights and buzzers get tested after long highway runs. Very high speeds make thing worse as while the viscosity goes down the temps go up some more and the vicious cycle goes until you get the buzzer or a rod out the top. All this while the water temp is perfectly normal. I just took mine apart to fix vacuum leaks and found oil all over the place. Shouldn't there be some kind of one-way valve between the crankcase and the vacuum hoses? Cleaned it all up, of course, but what will stop this from happening again? |
