Surely he can find a 1.6 rabbit or jetta engine to bolt on the vanagon bits from the existing engine. If there's no existing engine, he can still use any VW 1.6 from a rabbit, jetta or any other car using that engine. It's just going to cost about $1000 to find the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, pan, pulleys, dipstick, oil filler and engine mounts to complete the conversion.
