If the heater did not get warm you were not flowing coolant. Either the system was way too low or something major is a miss. Obviously the low coolant level warning system is not working. Just because the light came on once does not mean the complete system is working. The gauge finally pegged when you made steam and the oil light came on since the engine was so hot that you were losing oil pressure. You need to check things out but since you drove for a while without coolant flow you need to plan on some serious engine damage occurring. Most likely you will now internal head gasket leaks, along with melted gaskets and pulled studs.

HEY all

I have another question about my 87 vanagon. I got a different engine installed after a head cracked on my old motor and its been doing GREAT..up til today...so weird how things just pop up out of the blue, I drive it to work just like i have for several weeks and this morning just before i got to work the temp needle pegged HOT and the oil buzzer and light came on and when i got to work man steam was everywhere....but my coolant light never did come on.......it has before so i know it works. so i check the oil and i have to admit it was a little low.....drove it back home and low and behold its still hot as hell and on comes the oil light and buzzer.......I got a bosch filter on it......Oh and on the way home the heater never did get warm......which was strange....it was fine the night before. i was thinking thermostate....but can that affect the oil temp and such???? also is that a coolant line that runs around the top inside of the engine compartment? Thanks Rus in bartlesville
