Look at the rotor surface. There may be something wrong with the contact face, especially if the rotors were turned. Brake lathes can be (and ARE) set up wrong all the time...

Changed the front brake pads on my 91 GL (197 k) yesterday since the wife was complaining of a metal sound on braking. Sure enough on the driver's side the inboard (piston side) pad was fully worn, yet the outboard still had a lot of life left in it. The passenger side looked fine as well. Put new pads on both sides, but I'd love to prevent this from happening again... The calipers are newish Girling ones that I installed last spring, and the slider pins (?? what are those things called ??) on the calipers seemed to move smoothly. Any thoughts? The brake pressure regulator just controls the pressure between front and back, no? Could the pad have simply broken off?

Thanks,

Dan
