Robert,

The caliper has much heavier architecture as the keyway for the rotor is much wider. There are additional ribs on the caliper itself for added strength. Since the rotors are larger in diameter, the SA calipers have their mounting holes further away from the top of the caliper so that when installed on the steering knuckles, the net effect is they are positioned about a half inch further out from the center of the hub.

VW did something very similar to the Syncro 16. In that application, they changed the steering knuckle (aka suspension upright). They "pushed out" the caliper mounting so that the LT28 rotor (same size as SA rotors). The calipers used is the same as regular Syncros and Vanagons. That is because despite being of the same diameter., The LT28 rotors are single plane.

The problem with these systems for Syncro 16 owners like myself is the SA calipers will sit another half inch further out on the SA rotor. It does open up possibilities of using 12 inch rotors from a Mercedes with the SA calipers on Syncro 16 uprights.

RE: rear discs. I would do it because it is eaasier to replace pads than drums. Olus they clean up better and faster after a run through the mud. They are also less prone to fade as the can run cooler. They do not get the "bell effect' associated with overheating drums.
