Roger,

I have had close to the exact same problem with my factory installed Sound
Choice (Heidelberg ?) radio in our '91 Westy.  The only difference is that
in addition to the FM, the AM also goes out.  Of course, as the Vanagon gods
would have it, my problem only surfaced the day before my wife and I took
off on our 77 day trip last summer from VA to British Columbia.  During our
trip, the radio worked on some days and didn't on others.

I decided not to fix mine and since I didn't want a glitzy radio, I recently
purchased a closeout Blaupunkt from
http://www.midwestelectronics.com/index.php.   Had I not purchased from
them, I would have bought something from Crutchfield here in Harrisonburg,
VA.
