No one stated this explicitly, but the engine from all Vanagon's 1986 to 1991 was the same 2.1 liter WBX engine. Nothing special about it being an 87 or a Wolfsburg with regard to the engine it had. I concur with all the other posts you received, particularly the one about a mechanic who didn't know how to find you an engine for this van being not so impressive with his knowledge. Rebuilt engines get shipped all over the country (assuming you are in the US) for installation. In addition to saying where you are located, you might also tell us what "engine cancer" means. What did he really say was wrong with the engine? What symptoms caused you to take it into a mechanic? Since he doesn't seem to be on top of things, maybe the problem isn't as major as he thinks it is. It might be a much simpler fix than you are thinking. Then again, it might not be.
