If my memory is correct a US gallon is 3.78 liters and an imperial gallon is 4.54 liters. We used imperial gallons in Canada before we switched to the metric system. Look up imperial gallons not canadian gallons. We usually get 20 to 21 miles per imperial gallon on long trips with our '85 Westfalia with a 1.9 wbx. and a 4 speed.
