I wonder if the VIN is from the replaced dash or from the tag on the
top of the wheelwell...
Here in OR they're a LOT less picky about jacking up the dash and
driving a new car under it. Had a customer with a '70 Type 1 that was
in reality a '72. Discovered the difference when I had to replace
the turn signal switch. OR DMV wasn't really too concerned about it.
Had it been in my home state of CA, they'd have seized it.
Really sounds like a late model retitled as an 82.
