on a similar note, I have a true story:
While I have never really been "caught" or had any trouble stealth camping,
on one occasion I had no choice but to camp at a WalMart in Nebraska. I
chose a spot towards the back of the lot, near a couple other RVs but still
in the midst of some other cars. I went in around 9pm to buy something to
drink (it included a free empty bottle for the middle of the night heheh),
and just as I started drifting to sleep shortly after, I was awoken to very
loud revving engines right next to me. I peered out of the window to see a
large jacked-up truck driving in cicrles around me with the passengers
hooting and yelling "GET 'ER DONE! GIT R DONE IN THERE!" It was the first
time I had heard this expression and was a little puzzled... little did I
know it was becoming a national catchphrase.
The only other hassle (not stealth camping) I have had was at Guadalupe
National Park in west Texas. I was awoken at 6am by a ranger. I was the
only person in the whole campground, and I chose a normal non-hookup
"tenting" site as I often prefer. The "RV" area was just a parking lot with
sodium lights. I had paid my fees, and I always enjoy the little slips with
picnic tables, etc.
Anyway, as I was not "tenting", I was in violation of the park rules.
Apparantly anyone sleeping in their vehicle must use an RV site. After a
long negotiation, I was let go without penalty, but was sternly infomred
that if the campsite had filled up overnight and someone wanted to do tent
camping, I was keeping them from doing so. I guess I understand the
philosophy, but it was literally a rude awakening at the crack of dawn. I
was bothered enough that rather than spend another day there as planned, I
just cruised on to New Mexico.
