You don't have anything to apologize for. Your question was quite reasonable
(and I have never heard anything that would lead me to expect that his
coolant pipes would be anything less than fine quality).  Unfortunately, you
inadvertantly stepped into a snake pit by the random chance of whom you
happened to ask about. Terry's confrontational demeanor on the list (before
he was thrown off) led to some very strong opinions of him, and you stepped
right into that. You had no way of knowing that.  Don't take that as an
indication that you need to be selective about what you ask here (besides
the obvious step of searching the archives first when possible). Newbies are
always welcome. We were all newbies once, and this forum is meant to be a
place to learn about Vanagons.
