i use needlenose pliers... be CAREFUL not to catch the part of the lever that slides over the metal tab on the climate control faceplate - otherwise you'll crack the faceplate too.. i usually use a thin flathead to hold it down while im pulling w/ the needlenose pliers... BTW - use alittle grease on the metal tabs before you put the new ones on...so they'll be easier to remove next time..
