Sarah,

You could also ask this question on the subaruvanagon group or the Tiico group on yahoo, as a few people every so often are removing their old VW engines and installing Subaru or inline VW engines in their place. I know, I was one of them, Subaru in my case.

Not knowing your budget, a used good running VW 2.1L waterboxer engine removed for a transplant should go for around $500 to $1000, depending on condition and your location. Your mileage may vary, as well as the condition of the engine and it's accessories.

Again, depending on your budget, you might consider swapping in a Subaru, 1.8 inline VW, TDI VW or who knows.

But at least look at your options, as well as a Boston Bob or Go Westy rebuild.

Cheers,

Dave

Hello! My bus has recently been diagnosed with engine cancer and needs a transplant ASAP. I'm looking for a complete engine compatible with my 1987 Vanagon, Wolfsburg ed. I know this is an obscure request, and I've been informed that the chances of me finding a spare VW engine somewhere are slim, but if anyone has any insight or suggestions about how I could obtain such a part, please respond. Thank you!!!!
