The only solid green wire inside the wiring box would be for the tach signal. I'd guess you are seeing the blue/green wires for the coolant level switch. What colors are the wires on either side of the one you saw as green? VW used the same basic pins and colors for all the Vanagons so if you have a later one to look at you can see where the green wire should be on the round 7 pin.
