How about a piece of lexan, on the back print the white in screen printing (flopped, to read right from the front side) then coat the back of that with a match to the VW brown, then laminate some adhesive

and peel-off... you could pull the knobs and lay down a perfect new surface BEHIND the lexan, where it would never be scratched or dissolved.

this wouldn't take care of the upper and lower "shoulders" of the bent

metal front, but it would take care of the hardest-to-repair part. I still think the detail required is too fine for vinyl.
