Subject: 1.9L starts but wont run long
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi all I took on a Project to help a local list member that is moving out of the country and needed to sell his late 85 vanagon GL. It had a problem of starting then stalling out. He had purchased a new fuel pump and lots of other stuff for it and is now on a deadline to get it running to sell.

so i put it on the lift and installed the new fuel pump and filter then replaced misc vac lines that were very old and cracked. charged the battery and turned it over after priming the fuel pump. It starts now but only revs to 2k rpm for about 5-10 seconds then drops off and stalls. ive checked misc items and swapped out the temp 2 sensor on the thermostat housing as with checked all grounds replaced pump relays and adjusted most of the linkage and throttle position switch. it revs strong and sounds good but just stalls off. I did put a gallon of fresh fuel in it since it sat for some time. It had the same problem before the pump was removed by the owner. it also does not smell like it is burning oil or over rich. it is smoking on start but untill it runs i dont like to point fingers till i know its not burn off from anywhere. Ive had problems with my 2 1.9L in the past but nothing of this sort. I have not done a compression check but with the way it sounds i really dont have the feeling i need to do one.

what did i miss? bypass air reg. doesnt have time to close off in 5-10 seconds. so i dont thing that is the issue. i did pull the hoses and check air did flow through it. the Owner did install a new OEM AFM and the boots and hoses all look good. air cleaner is also new.

I need to get it running to get out of my garage since i have another project waiting. for this one to be done thanks for any suggestions. Jonce
