Josh,

Its been years since i have driven in Mexico, though I spent several years driving all over the place down there in a 63 volkswagen van during the 80s !!! My take is that while the toll roads are often soooo much better and safer etc. you loose a lot of the flavor of the true experience of Mexico when driving the "autopistas". Some of these toll roads can also cost a substantial amount of money as well. My suggestion would be to have a look at some of the more recent guidebooks that might provide the actual current costs as well. AAA would likely have good up to date info. I used to use the Peoples guide to Mexico, http://www.peoplesguide.com/ and I see it is apparently still being published, you might check this out.

Whatever you end up doing have fun !!! Some of my most memorable travel experiences were from exploring Mexico in my 63 vw van !!!
