The fuel pump on my '86 makes noise when the inlet is plugged with flakes of rust or other debris in the fuel tank. I change the fuel filter when the pump gets noisy, and it gets quiet again. Also when the engine shows signs of fuel starvation, like slow or no acceleration, it means it's time to change the filter again.
