Subject: Re: gas tank; fixing Syncro tank sender

Sam What I did with mine is, after getting everything out of the way. I took a SS dental pick and cleaned around what was left of the 2 contacts in the middle of the round sender assembly (outside)...They were corroded and then snapped when I tried to carefully disconnect the wire boot to them. after digging out some of the plastic around the two post, so I had something to connect to.

this next step I recommend you do with your gas tank Very low on gas.

I then electric soldered 2 new leads to the posts, I made up a shrink wrapped harness that fit the wires there..

When I touch the soldering iron to the post I could hear the gas boiling inside the tank... kinda feels like defusing a bomb eh? I then took a big gob of all weather outdoor silicone and completely built a dome over the whole cleaned up area. This has worked just fine for me over the last two years.. I had been getting weird gas gauge readings for years. In fact I've gotten them in all my buses... so as usual.... weird seemed normal.... But I figured it was a resistance problem, when it finally would not work and then worked as soon as I went thru some real water, like a good rain or crossing a stream, sometimes would even go all the way to full in a real heavy downpour (I figure water shorting across the connectors).... that whole circle of bolts that holds the sender (on my Syncro) are rusted. Instead of trying to fix that, I figure I'll replace the whole tank, when I make my mind up about a transplant.

No that's not a hair transplant... an engine transplant.. I'm still on the fence about this one because, the thing still runs OK... it only has 140kkm...that's less than 100k original miles.. If it ain't broke................... it's a Vanagon it will be soon.

Hey where do I get one of those gas saving Barbie heads?... just got back from Fla.... it was cold... but not -20 like here.

later Dudes
