The tanks have been special ordered from Germany by several people in the past. AFAIK, they are no longer available that way through VW.

Part number 251 201 075 AD is the specially shaped Vanagon Syncro Diesel tank. The diesel starter is larger and in a different location than the gas starter. The plastic tank has a recess formed in the needed area depending on intended use.

The parts info shows that there were 6 different tanks used in various incarnations of Syncro. Only 2 were diesel tanks, one for vans and one for pickups, with different filler hole locations being the difference. The 245 number prefix is for the pickup versions, the 251 for Vanagons. The sliding door of the van required the van filler to be in the rear most location. Pickups have a filler in front of the rear wheel.

The 245 201 075C number from Karl is the diesel tank for pickups. Both part numbers are molded into the tank but a different filler hole is bored depending on the vehicle type. The only difference between the numbers is where. The tanks are molded with a thick boss for both filler spots but only one is drilled and that determines the true part number.
