You know, I hadn't been excited over a vehicle for years before I bought my Vanagon in 2003. I researched for weeks looking for the perfect camping vehicle, and in the end I concluded that nothing ANYWHERE even came close to the Vanagon. It was so far-and-away better than the minivans and full size conversions that I was willing to pick up my mechanics tools and maintain a 12+ year old vehicle after over a decade of having greasemonkeys change my oil for me.

If the engine isn't in the back, I just can't get as excited over it. I grew riding up in my father's '68 loaf, though, so I was probably already infected and just didn't know it.

Is there really anything out there even in the same class?
