Found this product which claims to be self adhering and self sealing tape for repair of hoses. Sounds like a solution for on the road leaks and is even good for leaks on hoses in the engine bay....

Self-Fusing Silicone Rubber Tape

Form fits around any configuration, Self sticking with no adhesive. Fuses to itself in 24 hours. Temp range -60F to 500F with no stickiness or peeling. Unaffected by fuel & oils and provides an air and watertight seal. Great for emergency hose repair, wiring harness work, electrical connections and tool grips. A perfect tape solution.
