I have a working odometer and gauge but I still push it all the time, once or twice I've pushed it too far. Fortunately I carry 9L of extra fuel INSIDE my 15" SA Rhein spare (up front stock location) in a BMW spare wheel reserve fuel tank. There is one on eBay right now (not mine - usual disclaimers) although I seem to recal mine being cheaper:

Title on the auction is "BMW SPARE FUEL RESERVE TANK E23 E24 E28 E30 E34 E36 OEM"

Seller is: be-styled_company

Item number: 8042265861
