I coated the exposed metal on the "inside" with a rust inhibitor paint of some sort. Something over the counter from the hardware store--nothing special. Just enough "paint" to cover any possbile bare metal but not enough to show on the exterior paint. Then I plugged the holes with vinyl (plastic) caps that you get at the harware store for plugging holes (usually in the specialty fasteners, wing nuts, springs cabinet or drawers section of the hardware store) They are usually also available in black. Available in various sizes. My bus in Bamboo Yellow so I went with white vinyl plugs. Obviously you can see the plugs close up,but once you're 5 feet from the bus they're barely noticable.
