I got a '91 Subaru (2.2) that a kid ran into a ditch, 135K miles, for $200. You can use your starter (depending on the year of your Vanagon), your cat & muffler & your clutch. That means you need the adapter kit, header, etc, etc. My price guess (I have not done it yet but seeing as my 2.1 came apart yesterday afternoon it will be sooner than later) is $1100 for the conversion parts. If you're interested check it out for yourself.
