Proper balancing is an essential part to all engines, not just I4's, and the smooth running of an engine starts with the proper balance the rotating assembly. This is the reason the Zetec can run more smoothly than the subies do despite the common misperception that being a boxer automatically provides a smoother running engine. If you get any rotating assembly to less than 2g/in per plane you're going to be doing very well. We are currently running a study comparing the balance of the zetec, subie 2.2, 2.5, and the aba VW 2.0l assemblies and should have some hard data in June or July, so stay tuned... and balanced :)
