In the '87 Westy I put a "yellow top" Optima in the main passenger side on its side . My vented battery box was missing 3 sides but had the support rails and cover riveted in (PO). I thought about upright but didn't want to modify the metal cover with carpet over it. I've got the fitted middle kitchen rug(TBD) and the dogs take turns using the back part of the pedestal for their front feet as they stick their noses out of the passenger window. I just took off the front vented panel and have the plastic top mounts sticking in the gap. Fits OK. One of the days I'll pick up a vented battery box from the wrecking yard and just cut a slot in front of it.
