There's two issues that give you the gas-pump drips.

The one you are experiencing is common to early vanagons. Sometime late in production, VW started putting in a filler neck with a check valve down at the tank end (just a caged ball that floats to shut off the flow).

The other issue is dripping underneath the van after a fill-up, there are a number of seals that can cause this. Commonly, it's one of these: - The plastic left-to-right crossover hose on top of the tank (or it's plastic fittings). - The lines to one of the vent canisters (you have one inside each front wheel arch).

Ken at Van-Again (www.vanagain.com) used to sell a gas tank reseal kit with all the parts you'd ever need when you drop the gas tank, I know he was having trouble sourcing the crossover line recently, you can check with his website.
