Well I know for sure and it does! I have had a short shift kit in my 5 speed T3 for nearly 13 years now. Bought the van new in '92 and had a short shift kit in it within 12 months...

It has never given problems (neither has the gear box) and still works as well as the day I put it in.

Forget about the extension for the gear stick. It just undoes part of the gain achieved by the shorter shifter. I dunno if it's meant for short people or nor but my wife who usually drives the T3 is 5'2" tall and she has no problems reaching the gear stick. In fact she has less than before we installed the kit as she had to reach further forward in 2nd and 4th gear and that hurt her back. No more of that since the kit went in....

Enjoy the short shifter in your 5 speed!
