Okay, I'm pretty sure I've done this right. If you look at Tom's website about the cv joints: http://volksweb.relitech.com/cvjoints.htm he has pictures in Step 4 of the "Front" and "Back" of the CV joints. You can see the difference between the front and back of the inner race. One has a raised circle, the other is totally flat. My "fronts" face the flange they're being bolted to. In the case of my joints, that means the group of 3 lines in a row faces the flange, and the single groove (which is concealed by metal base of the boot when installed on the shaft is towards the axle.
