If you have not found out yet it is most likely ATF. is it red ? I have ben working on my vanagon for a while in a garage and have had the same problem. You should fill it, not to much, on the low end of the stick, drive it 11 miles, check and fill again and see what happens. There is a simple rubber seal on the pan that tends to leak, but other than that I hope we both do not need to pull our tranys to fix a inner seal.
