One trick the old-timers used during overhaul on old opposed cylinder
aircraft engines was to put a cotton string along the face of the
mating surfaces on the crankcase halves. I don''t remember the size of
the string, but between it and whatever sealant was used, once crushed,
there would be no crankcase leaks, which those engines were famous for.
I don't remember where else the string trick was used, but I'm sure it
had other applications.
