The fuel pump only runs for a few seconds when you turn the ignition switch on but there is power to the coil constantly. Leaving it on without starting the engine was certainly bad during the days of breaker point ignition systems but I wouldn't want to do it even with the more modern ones.

My radio is not hot wired and my understanding is that when I turn the ignition switch on to play the radio, without starting the engine, the fuel pump is pumping also, and that is not good. So I can't play the radio unless the engine is running. I suppose with the fuel pump kill switch in the kill position I should be able to play the radio with the ignition turned to on with no harm done, right? Or is there something else bad about having the ignition on without starting the engine? > Thanks, Anthony > '89 Syncro GL (Hidalgo) > > > JordanVw@AOL.COM wrote: In a message dated 3/16/06 11:51:41 AM Eastern Standard Time, > gronski@GMAIL.COM writes: > > > >>Would it be possible to put a switch on the dash to disable the fuel >>pump?
