I don't think that "we" as a list are doing anything. However, as
individuals, we can each choose to act or not act.
At this point I really don't have a dog in this fight, or do I? We, as a
Vanagon community, are often looked to for information, advice, etc. from
those both new to the Vanagon world and those that have been around for a
long time. I think that it is a very good thing that this is discussed on
this list.
I wonder also if we might have a larger responsibility. I say wonder,
because I'm not sure. Place yourself in the shoes of a novice, first-time
Vanagon buyer. You have done a little bit of research and know that the
Carat are some of the more desirable Vanagons. You find this one on eBay and
you place a bid. After you win the auction you later find out that your
purchase was not actually a Carat. In short, you discover that you got
screwed. What taste does this leave in your mouth for Vanagons and the
Vanagon community?
Do we owe it to the prospective buyer to try to politely correct the
situation? Do we owe it to the prospective buyer once we know that this is
not an innocent error, but an intentional misrepresentation? I know that if
I were that naive, first-time potential Vanagon owner I would be very
grateful if a more knowledgeable, more experienced person exposed this as
the fraud that it is.
I don't think that caveat emptor applies in this situation. This is
intentional misrepresentation rather then just an error on the part of the
seller.
My 2¢.
Cheers,
Bruce
