I have a 280Z that has two VINs on it...that is, the dash VIN didn't match the body VINs, which all matched- had to get the CHP to do their voodoo and establish that the thing was kosher. The DMV wouldn't even talk to me about the car until that was done. Oddly enough they kept the dash VIN and not the others; I would guess because that's the usual/visual one and many people don't even know about the others but I didn't get an 'official' explanation. When I got the insurance I made sure they knew about it and made a note of it in the policy. Never had to test it, but other than the red-tape PITA legwork part it was no biggie. YMMV.
