The Audi V8 engine is actually quite light. Complete engine weighs 473 lbs, including all auxiliary units. The cylinder block is cast in hypereutectic alloy of aluminum with a 17% silicon content and weighs only 62 lbs.

The cylinder heads, oil sump top section and toothed belt housing are made of aluminum. The valve covers are die cast magnesium and coated with a thin synthetic material to prevent corrosion. I can tell you that this works. I can wiped off the dust of my valve covers and they look brand new on my car even after being 16 years old.

The only steal parts in the engine really are the crank and cam. Even the connecting rods are forged from aluminum alloy. They are 154mm long, 20.5 wide and weigh 621 grams, including the bearing. The aluminum slipper skirt pistons are electroplated with iron, and then thinly coated with tin.

They are a great car, and I love driving mine. My friend who is a Porsche/Audi mechanic had one in the shop with 465,000 miles all original except maintenance, another one with 375,000.

If anyone is looking for any V8 parts including a complete running engine, PM me at _UCMYVW@aol.com_ (mailto:UCMYVW@aol.com) or Call 570-403-5054 and ask for Geno. He recently smashed up the front end and is parting it out.
