I don't think you have much to apologize for. It seems every car related list has a few people who make MPG claims that are far better than anyone else. Do they really get that, consistently? I seriously doubt it. I suspect measurement errors of one or more types. Either that or they drive in a manner that is not consistent with common sense and sharing the road with others safely. You have to throw out the upper and lower values to get what a normal driver can expect. I have owned a whole bunch of Vanagons and the gasoline ones get at best about 20 mpg the way I drive. Road speed makes a huge difference and if you cruise at a real 55-60 you can do pretty good. MPG drops off quickly with speed. The Vanagon odometer is set for 185R14 tires. You can get a big MPG change just by fitting a different size and not correcting for it in both speed and distance.
