Black smoke and running OK floored tells all. You have an O2 sensor or wiring problem. Flooring it tells it to ignore the O2 sensor. Another test is to quickly turn the ignition off and back on. If it runs normally for 30 seconds to a minute after the key blip, O2 sensor problem for sure.

Hello Volks.

well after nights and nights and nights of painstaking work and also three engines later i finally got my vanagon running wonderfully.....and after driving down the road for awhile on a trip of about 40 miles with a big smile on my face something started happening..... it started surging........when i floored it, it would run good....then when i let off between 40-65 it would sputter black smoke and like there was no power and so i would floor it again......runs good getting up to speed....then surges again....... at low speeds it does good......but sputters....idles good but sputters now. this happened and it would come and go, Run great for a week ago surge and then run good again. NOW im having a huge problem. I accidently ran out of gas the other day and so after getting gas the surging wont go away. this is a list of what i have done previously Ive changed the roter, dist. cap., new rubbers on the injectors, new fuel filter, new plugs, wires good, no fuel leaks, put in some injector cleaner and octane booster, even put in a different brain. Temp is good. Oil is great. not getting hot or anything, so i just dont get it.........could it be the fuel pump or the o2 sensor...(the reason im asking this is because i accidently messed the end of it up...forgot to put it back in the exhaust and it drug the ground for awhile and sort of ground off the end, I KNOW im stupid.) But would or could that affect the symptoms im having? i need help. Rus in Bartlesville
